The Urgent Need for Climate Restoration
Climate change is not just an environmental issue; but also a significant economic and social challenge. The impacts of climate change, such as extreme weather events, sea-level rise, and resource scarcity, can disrupt supply chains, damage infrastructure, threaten biodiversity, and displace communities.
Traditional approaches to mitigating global warming have focused on reducing and avoiding carbon emissions. These efforts are crucial, but cannot halt climate change: carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will continue fueling the greenhouse effect for thousands of years.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned that even if we achieve net-zero emissions by mid-century, we still need to remove billions of tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to limit global warming to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. This monumental challenge demands a global effort and innovative solutions.
